Managing Your Renovation Costs
June is supposed to be the beginning of home renovation season. But you'd never know it from the constant remodeling activity going on these days. In fact, you might call it the never-ending home renovation boom. But it can be an ongoing headache for you if you don't take control of your remodeling project.
With the good contractors and subs backlogged with jobs, you'll be lucky if your project gets done at all this summer, experts say. But even if you manage to sign on a crew, don't expect them to worry about controlling costs in your project.
Make sure you know all the numbers, down to the cost of a pound of nails. Keep a running total (an Excel spreadsheet is an easy way to do it). It's your cash that's being used to pay for your renovation. If you don't care enough to control the costs, no one else will either.
